Literature Review

Art Museum Libraries and Librarianship
Joan M. Benedetti, Scarecrow Press, 2007.

This book gave me a good overview of the workings of art museum libraries. It’s organized into sixteen sections of sixty-one essays written by practicing art museum librarians covering reader services, technology, security, cataloging, space planning, collection development, visual resources, ephemera, special collections, archives, fundraising, public relations, volunteers and interns, professional development, and solo librarianship. This provided a great companion to my internship at MoMA.

The Century of Artists’ Books
Johanna Drucker, Granary Books, 1995.

As MoMA has a large collection of Artists’ Books, this was good introduction to the history and making of Artists’ Books giving me insight into the variety of art movements of the last century and tracing their development in form and concept over the different styles of them. It also helped me formulate questions for my interview with Bibliographer David Senior who oversees the acquisition and cataloging of them for the library.

Documenting the art of our time: a new research facility for The Museum of Modern Art
Milan R. Hughston, Art Libraries Journal 32, no. 4. October 2007.

As Chief of MoMA’s Library, Milan Hughston’s article provided a recent history of the library and the process and decisions that went into design and organization of the new spaces. It also proved a valuable resource with my various interviews of library staff.

Artists’ Books and Beyond: The Library of The Museum Of Modern Art As A Curatorial And Research Resource
Janis Ekdahl, International Conference, Museums in Libraries – Libraries in Museums, Moscow, May 17- 20, 1999.

Ekdahl provided historical background of the library’s beginnings and gave specific information, insight, and context into the history and growth of the Artists’ Book collection and catalog at MoMA.

Art Subject Cataloging in the Real World
Kathy Corcoran, Abrahams Library, Joslyn Museum, cataloging workshop, ARLIS/NA, Los Angeles, 31 March 2001.

This article provided me with an overview of Art Subject cataloging and catalog issues that come up for museum libraries. Was a good article for preparing me for my interview with Head Cataloger Danny Fermon.
